The Questionnaire talks to Justin Page

This (July 2003) we talk to Justin Page.

Justin has been attending Kancha Buddhist Center since he was in High School. We interviewed him at that time.

He attended his first Kadampa Festival with Geshe Kelsang Gyatso in Calistoga, California, in Spring 2000.

When were you first attracted to Buddhism?

I was first attracted to Buddhism about two years ago, when I was at a low point in my life.

What made you choose to come to this Buddhist Center?

I needed a place with people who shared similar thoughts and helped me defuse my confusion.

Were you apprehensive about coming? What did you expect?

I had no idea what to expect when I first went to a class. I expected people in robes who chanted.

What were your first impressions when you arrived?

The center was much different from what I had expected. When I first walked in, I felt a very relaxing energy pervading the room. Actually my first time attending the introductory class I was late, but I immediately I felt welcomed. Everyone was happy and smiley. I loved the beautiful paintings of Buddhas and inspiring statues.

What do you like best about coming here?

I love receiving guidance from spiritual friends. Every time I go to the center I feel happy and relaxed. When my life feels overwhelming, I know there is a place I can go to help my mind chill out.

How would you explain the benefits of meditation to someone new?

The benefits of meditation are countless. My life has been greatly improved through daily meditation. Before I began meditating my grade point average in school was a low 1.9. After I had been meditating for a while my concentration improved, and my grade point average went up to a 3.8. This is only one benefit of meditation in my life, but there are many more.

How has what you have learned here made a difference in your everyday work and home life?

In my daily life, Buddhist teachings have helped me look at stressful situations as a challenge, and something I can learn from. At home, I treat my family with more compassion and understanding.

What do feel that Buddhism can offer to the world today?

If people take Buddha's teachings to heart there is no doubt that they will find true lasting happiness.

What is your favorite Kadampa Buddhist quotation?

Cease to do negative actions,
Learn to do positive actions,
Control your mind,
And benefit others.

What is your favorite Dharma movie, and why?

"The Shawshank Redemption". I like this movie because it has so much Dharma. The movie is about a guy who is put in prison for a crime he didn't commit, and he never gives up on trying to escape. Next time you see it, look at it from the Buddhist point of view. It is a great movie.

With which historical Kadampa Buddhist practitioner do you most identify, and why?

I would have to say Je Tsongkhapa (AD 1357-1419). His teachings are so clear and logical. I try to think clear and logically, just like Je Tsongkhapa.

What aspect of the Bodhisattva's way of life most inspires you?

I love the idea of exchanging our regular view of cherishing ourself, to cherishing others. Bodhisattvas are always thinking of how they can help others.

What's the first thing you're going to do when you become a Buddha?

When I attain Buddhahood, I will send out countless emanations in order to spread Dharma to all living beings.
