The Questionnaire talks to David Walker |
When were you first attracted to Buddhism? About a year and a half ago. What made you come to this Buddhist center? One night at work I was reading the Idiot's Guide to Buddhism -- you've gotta start somewhere :-) A friend saw me reading it and told me about the Center. We came one night and have been coming three days a week ever since. Were you apprehensive? What did you expect? Nervous for sure! I thought the whole room would be all monks and nuns and everyone would be chanting in Tibetan. What were your first impressions? We were greeted at the door and made very welcome. I felt as though we had come into our own living room. What do you like best about coming here? The feeling of family. Everyone is so friendly. And oh, how I love pujas !!! How would you explain the benefits of meditation to someone? In our world our mind is racing along at 200 miles an hour, and meditation allows us to make a pit stop. It can be a kind of spiritual deep breath, but it also has the potential to change your life !!! How has what you have learned made a difference in your work and home life? It has definitely helped me with my anger. Now I am able to not worry so much about the little stuff that used to upset me so. Working in an emergency room I had closed my emotions off to deal with the manifest suffering that I see daily. With meditation I can open myself up and show my compassion to patients and try and help in my own small way. What do you feel Buddhism can offer the world today? Peace in our hearts, our lives, and our world. What is your favorite Kadampa Buddhist quotation?
With what historical Kadampa practitioner do you most identify and why? The Tibetan King Yeshe O -- he gave his life so that pure Dharma could flourish. Enough said!! What aspect of the Bodhisattva's way of life most inspires you? Giving fearlessness, from the perfection of giving. What's the first thing you're going to do when you become a Buddha? Emanate, Emanate, Emanate !!!!!!! What is your favorite Dharma movie, and why? Waking Life -- It has so much wisdom and what I call dings of reality, little insights into the nature of our world that hit you like a ton of bricks. What is it like living at a Dharma center? A little hard at first. I thought it would be like living like I always did, just with a dash of Buddism added in. It really helps you to get over your ego. Its great to be here though! It is amazing to have room-mates who have the same spiritual drive and goals that you do. Everyday I am thankful for such an amazing opportunity so soon. I can hardly believe what my life has become. What is your favorite book authored by Geshe Kelsang? Eight Steps To Happiness -- It is such a good book for beginners. But so profound for everyone no matter how long-term and how advanced your practice.
